About Me

Ser Puertorriqueña en los Estados Unidos, La pregunta de ellos y nosotros

Concreteislandista was created by Tabitha Serrano. Raised as a little girl in the tri-state area she learned to love the arts with various trips to the area’s museums. Tabitha also loves to travel and has lived in Italy and traveled to Spain. She has visited a few U.S. states including California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut in search of fashion, art, and culture, but finds home in the NJ and NYC area. Tabitha has her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Marketing and Management with a minor in International Business. Before her graduation date she was hired in the fashion industry in New York City and from that point on has worked various jobs in the fashion industry.

In January 2016 she created the blog Concreteislandista from a need to share her trips to fashion exhibitions and her love of New York City. With her inside look into the fashion industry and ability to work in the city, she was in a prime position to write about anything fashion and New York City-related. As her blog has grown into a business Tabitha has been able to work with other bloggers, makeup artists, designers, and more. Her love of writing has afforded her opportunities to write for others and expand her career into the Editorial and Public Relations fields. In the past, she served as Editorial Manager for Latinista.com and has contributed to Mitu.com and Alegria Magazine. She loves being able to bring fashion, travel, lifestyle, and NYC to the forefront for those who can’t get to the concrete island.

Long Post - Wrap of my solo trip. If you’re nervous to solo trip, forget the nervousness and do it anyway!

Tips: Pick a place you’re familiar with, perhaps a place you’ve visited before.

Choose a hotel with staff vs an Airbnb ( for safety) they can recognize you if anything happens

Choose a place that is gated or has some type of safety precautions.

Research the area and read reviews, my hotel was in one of the more expensive parts of San Juan ( again for my safety). Anything can happen to you anywhere but better to choose the best option possible.

Learn the language! I know a lot of the diaspora don’t speak Spanish, but guess what? If you’re an adult whose parents didn’t teach them, it’s your responsibility to try. Doing so will make traveling easier, and the connection you get to your people is priceless. Learn YOUR country’s Spanish and lingo, don’t be nervous about getting every word right, most of the time they just appreciate you trying. I honestly only care about knowing PR version of Spanish bc it’s important to me to connect with my people while I’m there.

Next rent a car you’re familiar with for ease. Use common sense and always be aware of your surroundings. If you’ve ever conquered being alone in NYC you can do it!

Let someone know where you’ll be staying and give them info on the place and the places you’ll visit. I made an itinerary and shared it with my mom.

Check in with people back home occasionally ( I did so with my mom).

And enjoy doing whatever, whenever, however, or doing absolutely nothing (safely)!

Loves a fall day in her favorite museums. Stopped by the @metcloisters and @metmuseum during the weekend. The paintings in the reel are all on loan from @museoarteponce in Puerto Rico, one of the most renowned museums on the island. The paintings will be at @metmuseum until February 2024. The Flaming June (cover pic) in particular kept stopping people, because it is even more gorgeous in person. Go check it out if you’re in the city. #metmoment #themet #thecloisters #nycmuseums #explorepage

Took a trip to @hollandridgefarms before the season ends. If you are in or around NJ I highly recommend you take a trip to see all the beautiful flowers. There is also a bakery, hayrides, pony rides, farm animals and food trucks. Flowers were $1 per stem. Where’s your favorite flower or fruit farm? #hollandridgefarms #nj #tristatearea #newjersey

Words in written form are my favorite form of self expression. After a few days of reflection on what’s happened in Puerto Rico with hurricane Fiona and the excessive gentrification that’s been happening over the years, this is what came out. Feel free to share if you’re feeling the same. Read it on my blog. Link in bio. #hurricanefiona #puertorican #puertoricanbloggers #poetrygram

We all shop while on vacation right? I purposefully look for boutiques in those destinations and then stuff as much as possible in the luggage. It’s not a toxic trait… I swear! These top and shorts are from @sola_btq but you can find similar pieces on my Like to Know It. Link in bio. #petitestyleblogger #puertoricanblogger #latinabloggers
