The Makeup Show NYC

I recently attended The Makeup Show NYC for the first time ever. Open to press, beauty and fashion professionals this two day trade show allows industry insiders to expand their careers. There were also seminars, business forums, hands on workshops and a career fair. I was excited to learn about new products, techniques and discover brands I was not familiar with. Not to be missed were some of my favorite brands such as NYX, Makeup Forever and last but certainly not least Kat Von D. Here is what I saw, learned and most importantly what I bought!

Learned

I was able to sit in on the ” Editorial with Minerals. Truths and Misconceptions ” seminar taught by Valerie Hernández Garcia of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. She created looks that were editorial ready. In both the fashion and beauty industry when a look is editorial this simply means its meant to be shot for a magazine, commercial, etc. Tips given  included using stick glue (yes craft glue) to get eyebrows to form in your desired direction. This helps create a dramatic look and holds for a long period of time. This is a necessity when makeup artists work with models and are shooting long hours. Valerie also used the brands “Minerals in the Mist Recharge” spray to set the makeup. The “Recharge” scent is infused with a blend of ginger, mint, mineral nutrients and vitamins. The “Minerals in the Mist” spray comes in an additional three scents “Refresh” a mix of tangerine and grapefruit, “Relax” a blend of lavender and vanilla and “Restore” a grapefruit, lime and rosemary blend. The mineral makeup went onto the models face like a second skin. The mist not only sets the makeup but protects and hydrates your skin.

Valerie using Young Blood Mineral Cosmetics

Youngblood Cosmetics was founded by Pauline Youngblood in 1996. Before creating Youngblood Cosmetics Pauline worked as a medical aesthetician where she helped patients who had severe skin damage. Many of the patients had traumatic damage due to cosmetic surgeries, acne, rosacea and more. The patients recovery took up to six months or more and they didn’t have many choices to help conceal their skin. Pauline noticed this dilemma  and worked with chemists to create a line of makeup that could cover the harshest of scars. Not only was the line she created able to cover scars, it allowed the patients skin to heal and breath during the recovery period. It was not long until patients were using her products not only during recovery, but for everyday use.

Youngblood Cosmetics is influenced by California and its laid back lifestyle. Made specifically for sensitive skin, this cosmetics line includes eco-friendly and cruelty free ingredients. The minerals in Youngblood cosmetics include Malachite, Rhodolite, Hematite and Zincite. These finely ground minerals help protect your skins tissue and cells. Youngblood has won the “Best Foundation Award” from Beauty Launchpad and “Best Mineral Blush” from NewBeauty.

I also sat in on Artist of the Year award winner Jordan Liberty’s business forum ” Art and Influence”. Jordan is an L.A. based makeup artist, photographer and makeup educator. He has worked on TV, backstage at New York Fashion Week and on beauty campaigns around the world. Jordan can also be found on YouTube where his videos teach  educational and professional makeup tutorials. Jordan gave career tips and spoke about his go to products. He also created a refreshed  and clean look while using the new glossy eyelid trend. See the video below and watch him create the look.

Besides all the free beauty lessons learned and what I bought home I loved the body art at the show. Many makeup artists and agencies were creating out of this world looks. These works of art took hours! I also learned which makeup brands have worked with major TV shows and plays. The actors in the play  “War Paint” based on the lives of makeup giants Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden had their makeup done by MAC. While the makeup brands that worked with the shows ” This is US”,  “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and more were present at the Makeup Show.

I also loved the artwork by Moises Ramirez in the “Colors of Beauty ” art gallery. His artwork combines painting, photography, makeup artistry, illustration and drawing.

Bandelettes: Your Thighs New Best Friend!

Ladies the weather is getting warmer and we love wearing our cute dresses and skirts, don’t we? But with the rise of temperatures comes perspiration, sometimes in not the most comfortable places like the thighs! I know I’m not the only lady who has felt super uncomfortable on a hot day, even though I’m a summer lover. And because I work in NYC I’m on speed walk mood most of the time. This means my thighs are rubbing against each other quickly. Trust me this has lead to painful cuts and even bleeding. There have been a few hacks I’ve used to combat this problem like shorts under skirts which can be uncomfortable. I’ve also tried deodorant and baby powder to help with this dilemma. Some of these have worked, but some also wear off after a few hours.  Finally a pair of smart women have come up with a great solution. Bandelettes!

Creators Rena Abramoff and Julia Abasova creators of Bandelettes came up the idea for Bandelettes when they realized that many woman suffered from chafing like they did. The products on the market that women were using to help with chafing were not made for this issue. Those products were also not the prettiest. Rena and Julia were ready to be their own bosses, and like many immigrants they made their dreams reality. Bandelettes combines function with fashion. Unlike traditional thigh bands, Bandelettes actually stay up. Thanks to the patented stay up silicone rows inside the Bandelettes, these thigh bands won’t budge. They won’t roll or slip down your legs as you go on with your day.

Bandelettes has been featured in runways such as the Chromat Fall/Winter ’17 runway show for New York Fashion Week. Bandelettes accessorized the swimsuits and sportswear collection. The runway show was full of diverse and full figured models wearing Bandelettes. Diversity and body positivity are part of the Bandelettes brand identity. This was in full effect with plus sized and models of color at the press event I attended. The brands body positive message and the fact that they fit any body type are some of the reasons host of the night and Project Runway winner Ashley Tipton loves Bandelettes. Bandelettes have also been featured in magazines like Cosmopolitan, Seventeen and featured and raved about on shows like NBC Today and more.

I’ve worn the Bandelettes already with different outfits, and these discrete beauties are thigh savers. The first time I wore them was under a skirt that had a slit, where the lace of the Bandelettes could be visible depending on my movement. Although I didn’t mind much as the lace adds an extra detail to the outfit. I’ve also worn them under a dress and was worried there would be visible lines through the dress. This was not the case, you can’t even tell I’m wearing them!

Bandelettes

Bandelettes

The Bandelette is under my hand, but you can’t tell!

I found that the higher I put them on my thighs the more comfortable I felt. In this case no skin is rubbing against each other which could cause uncomfortable friction. They stayed put with a snug fit throughout the day and did not roll down. I will say at first the feeling of something wrapped around my thighs felt weird. But I quickly got used to them and forgot they were on. When putting on the Bandelettes, I suggest gently lifting the adhesive strips away from your skin and placing them where you want them. Simply dragging them up the leg can be a bit uncomfortable because of the silicones ability to stick.

Bandelettes.

Bandelettes can be found on their website, Layne Bryant stores, Amazon, Sears, and subscription box service Gwynniebee. Bandelettes cost $15.99 on their website, with the lace versions in colors red, black, chocolate, white, caramel and beige. Unisex Bandelettes are also available in solid colors. These versions are useful for sports like running and tennis where athletes suffer from chafing. Bandelettes run from size A which is equivalent to a pant size 2-4 through F the equivalent of a 3XL pant size.

Bandelettes becomes a part of your everyday wardrobe. As a fashionable solution to an every person and everyday problem, how could they not? Have you tried these thigh savers, or are you ordering some right now? Let me know, in the comments and on social media.

Things to do on Spring Weekends in NJ

nj travel

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine and truthful.

Spring is here and it is now possible for us northeasterners to ascend from hibernation in our houses for fun outdoor activities. Whether its a stroll in a park, bike ride or festival walk there are plenty of outdoor outings in New Jersey. The following are some of the places I like to go to spend a spring day in NJ and others that are on my “to do” list.

Princeton NJ, Princeton University  and its Art Museum

Princeton University Grounds

Princeton Township is one of the cutest towns I have ever visited in the state of NJ. The town which is home to the prestigious Princeton University is small enough to walk but full of interesting sites. I’ve walked the town and college grounds a few times and discover something new each time I visit. The diverse community is full of multiculture restaurants and shops. A mix of mom and pop shops as well as chain brands dot the main road of Nassau Street. One of my favorite places to visit on this street is Labyrinth Books, a book store I can spend hours in. The side streets of the town have just as much to offer as the main road. Don’t miss Palmer Square which offers more shops, restaurants and bars.  Some of my go to’s in this square include the Thomas Sweet Chocolates Shop which gives out samples of their gourmet chocolates, I also love Carter & Cavern Olive Oil Co. which lets you sample their olive oils on bread. If you or your kids want an extra treat step into the Bent Spoon, an ice cream shop that is always full of people.

Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds of Princeton University and visit the Princeton Museum. Now one might not think you would find great works of art in this modestly sized college museum, but you are wrong. There are more than 97,000 pieces of art in this museum. The works of Monet, Manet, and Goya and more have found a home here. Art from the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa fill the galleries ranging from classic oil paintings to modern pop art, photography and more. Massive sculptures and installations can be found on the grounds of the museum and college as well. Admission is free to enter. The Morven Museum and Garden is on my to do list. It not only offer tours of the museum but tea time, a festival of trees during the holidays and an art, craft and garden show in May. The show offers activities for kids as well such as a scavenger hunt. There is so much to discover in the town of Princeton and I am not done yet.Princeton Art Museum

Tips: Main highways in NJ like Route 1 or Route206  can easily get you into town. Route 27 runs right into the town and ends on Nassau Street, home of Princeton University. From  NYC take the Northeast Corridor on NJ transit to Princeton Junction at West Windsor. Once there take the Princeton shuttle to Princeton Station, right out side of Princeton University. If you prefer to drive your journey would begin at the Lincoln Tunnel. The town of Princeton is full of small streets and you may need to park in a parking lot. It’s a walking town so make sure you are wearing comfortable attire and pick up a Princeton discovery map found in many of the shops.

Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton NJ

Interested in an outdoor all day activity? Visit Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. The grounds include 42 acres of land  with outdoor sculptures. Also up for exploration are their six indoor galleries. Activities include something for the whole family. Tips: Tickets are specific to timed entry so buy your tickets in advance online. The grounds include exotic trees, flowers and landscapes if you have allergies be sure to bring your allergy medications.

Hot Air Ballooning: Various towns in NJ

If you want to see NJ from the sky hot air ballooning is the way to go. Hot air balloon rides are offered throughout the state. In Northern NJ  Phillipsburg you can take a one hour ride which includes a brunch and lunch with Balloonatics and Aeronuts. In Central NJ, Pittstown take a sunrise or sunset flight with champaign through Ballons Aloft. While Seize the Breeze  offers rides over southern NJ. If you plan to stay or visit NJ trough the summer don’t miss the Quick Check New Jersey Festival of Ballooning in Readington, NJ. This festival offers live music, food vendors, attractions and over 125 ballons for three days. Warren County also holds a week of hot air balloon activities with their Warren County Farmers Fair & Hot Air Ballon Festival. Visit NJ Attractions

Tips: Groupon offers discounts on Hot Air Ballon rides. Pay attention to the site throughout the season for great buys.

Liberty Science Center and Liberty State Park

A short subway ride or drive from NYC, these destinations are perfect for your entire family. Liberty State Park is part of the historic trilogy  that includes The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. During the 19th and 20th centuries this part of New Jersey was a critical transportation area for both goods and immigrants.Liberty State Park

Once you arrive at Liberty State Park take in views of the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Stoll the Liberty Walk Promenade along the water and then visit the Liberty Science Center. I visited this exploration center as a little girl and remember enjoying myself. I also have friends who take their kids and always enjoy their time there. It is an educational experience with hands on opportunities for kids of all ages. Liberty Science Center

Tips: Arrive early so you can take in the sights. You are also allowed to BBQ in Liberty State Park so bring the whole family and enjoy the day.

Planning a trip to New Jersey for vacation or just a three day weekend? Daniels Realty can find your perfect home away from home. For over 25 years this number one realty company has been helping families find a place to stay. Broker and manager Colleen Remmie and her team can find you the best luxury beach or family friendly rentals in Diamond Beach and Wildwood. Colleen is a lifelong resident of North Wildwood, so you are sure to find the best places to stay and visit while there.

Tip: Now some of you may know but NJ is the Garden State, but not only does it have lush greenery but an abundance of Wineries. If you are staying in southern NJ grab your partner or girlfriends for a night out at one of NJ’s many winery’s. Many like Heritage Vineyards use local fruits to make fruit wines. They are delicious!
